Navigating Chronic Stress: My Journey to Hormonal Balance
Towards the end of last year, I noticed an unwelcome change in my body—weight gain around my midsection that stubbornly refused to budge despite my efforts. Concerned, I opted for a spit hormone test, revealing that my hormones were completely out of balance, fueled by chronic stress. Initially in denial, I couldn't believe that as someone who preaches balance and prioritizes mental health, I was facing this challenge.
As I processed the diagnosis, I began to connect the dots, recognizing other symptoms like changes in my menstrual cycle and increased migraines. Suddenly, my active lifestyle, built around intense exercise, felt like a distant memory as I found myself needing naps and gentle walks instead. It was a stark adjustment, but one I knew was necessary.
In January, I embraced a period of rest, coinciding with an unexpected ice storm that confined me to my home. Amidst the stillness, I rediscovered the power of relaxation, indulging in frequent naps and allowing myself to simply be.
Supported by a caring community, I sought solace in daily prayer and gratitude practices. Each morning, I focused on one thing to be grateful for, shifting my mindset from negativity to positivity. Similarly, each night, I reflected on the day's successes, fostering a sense of accomplishment and peace.
Recognizing the impact of technology on my sleep, I made efforts to limit screen time after dark and established a soothing bedtime routine, complete with a long, hot bath infused with Epsom salt. I also prioritized natural light exposure in the mornings, avoiding screens until I'd soaked in the morning sunlight.
Adjusting my exercise routine, I scaled back to two days of strength training and one day of HIIT, incorporating daily walks to reach my step goal. I granted myself extra time for tasks to alleviate feelings of rush and anxiety and reduced my caffeine intake to one cup of regular coffee per day.
Above all, I've learned to be kind to myself, resisting external pressures and staying true to my own needs. And as I continue on this journey, I've also embraced neurofeedback as a tool for healing and growth.
Though my road to destress is ongoing, each day brings new opportunities for healing and self-discovery. With patience, faith, and self-compassion, I am committed to finding balance and reclaiming my health and vitality.
